Wales Coast Path - Total Distance

Finally gotten round to updating my spreadsheet recording miles I've walked on the Wales Coast Path, and those still to do!

Total shows 882 miles, but the path is being realigned in 2012/13 to match the 870 miles.

Plan to get back walking the path in January so look out for future posts and videos.

1,000 Miles

Since I decided to get fitter for 40 last summer I tried to cover at least 50 miles a month in order to get fitter etc.

For 2011 I covered 400 miles.

Today I passed a total of 1,000 miles since I started using Endomondo to track my progress. 600 miles in 11 months of 2012.

I'm now going to stop recording my weekly/monthly stats as now I'm more focused in getting fatter! rather than fitter. Being scrawny I need to eat more healthy foods and do less cardio to gain weight.

Still a few things to do for 2012 which I'm going to carry forward! to 2013. They are mainly running related so will use Endomondo to help motivate me to beat PBs etc.

Cloud Time

42 minutes and 1 second. PB for getting up Bosley Cloud stands and 41 minutes and 38 seconds from 2011 so not too bad considering the very wet and boggy conditions.

Took a couple of panoramic pictures at the top along with a video.

Two Years Old

Today it's 2 years ago since I started this blog.

It initially started for my travels then turned its focus to fitness. 2 years on I'd say its used for both!

Last week I went back to Brighton for a few days. The Thursday was glorious sunshine and not too cold for the time of the year!

An early rise whilst being on holiday was rewarded with an excellent sunrise after going for a jog along the seafront.

Later on in the morning I followed The Brighton Sculpture Trail.

Below videos of photos I took during the day and of the Brighton Wheel which wasn't there last time I visited.

New walk is... Wales Coast Path

At the beginning of the month I was up early to start on my travels to Chester. One bus change and I arrived at Chester.

Walking approx 2 miles from Chester city centre I arrived at the beginning (end for some walkers) of the Wales Coast Path.

The Wales Coast Path is 870 miles of Welsh coastal walking. The path is broken down into 8 different areas:

  1. North Wales & Dee Estuary
  2. Isle of Anglesey
  3. Menai, Llyn & Meirionnydd
  4. Ceredigion
  5. Pembrokeshire
  6. Carmarthenshire
  7. Gower & Swansea Bay
  8. South Wales & Severn Estuary
Along the way I saw an Airbus Beluga plane land, and the River Dee bore.

After 11 miles I arrived at Flint Castle and decided enough was enough for one day!

So 11 miles down, 859 to go!

I've contacted the Wales Coast Path website to see if I can get the miles for each of the 8 areas.

Their website is:

.... the next planned walk on the path will be from Flint round to Rhyl.

Excellent Blog

On the many marketing emails I get I came across one which mentioned a blog on the company website as they had donated some kit.

The kit is a GPS and a solar power kit.

The blog I've discovered is about a 19 year old cycling his way 6,000 miles from England to India over 6 months. To read about his travels with pictures and videos so far visit:

Big Kid!

Even though I am soon approaching 41! you can never tire of building Lego.

Using my nephew's Lego I have now built 5 different sets. From Cars up to Lego Super Heroes Batwing Battle Over Gotham.

The first set I tried was the Lego Creator Blue Roadster I bought. With this set you can build 3 different cars.

Below is my first video!

Downsizing!

A while ago I received an email from online retailer advertising a Motorola Defy Mini on a sim free basis.

The marketing for the phone includes,
"Water-resistant, dust-proof and with a scratch resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass display"
With the dry!! summer we have been having I thought the phone would be ideal for outdoor use if it happened to rain whilst I was out.

My previous phone was a HTC Desire (now sent off to be recycled!). The battery was starting to go and the display was pretty crap outdoors if the sun tried to come out.

Did the usual online research to see if I could get it cheaper than advertised in the email. Managed to get it on the very well know auction website for £97.00p including P and P. So a saving of over £57.00p!

So today was the first proper day testing it for taking pictures, video and using the Endomondo app. As the sun decided to make an appearance it was a good test to see how or if! I could see the display.

Taken in shade on the canal near Congleton

Taken in direct sunlight
The phone's display was a lot better than on the HTC Desire in the sun.

Next I decided to try out the camera on the phone. I also had my camera with me, a Panasonic DMC-FT1 for comparison on both pictures and video.

Bosley Cloud in the distance

The above was taken at normal zoom (camera on it is a 3 MP one)

Tried the zoom on the camera, 4 times maximum and as you can see the result wasn't very good!!

Below I had to take 2 pictures to fit the canal path in shot using the Defy Mini.

Whereas the DMC-FT1 with its 28mm wide lens I could fit both the tree and path in one shot.

Greens on the camera appear a lot darker than on the phone. Bandstand in the distance in Congleton Park.

Phone

Comparison video clips can be found on YouTube:

Motorola Defy Mini

Panasonic DMC-FT1

I found the speaker a lot better on the Defy Mini than on the HTC Desire. Updates for when I'd covered another km on Endomondo were useful.

As Endomondo uses GPS to track where you go you can expect the battery to go down somewhat.

For most of the time out I only had the GPS on, I just turned on the mobile data to refresh and upload my Endomondo stats.

GPS was on for 2 hours 15 minutes and the battery was showing 65% left. Will have to see if a full charge can last 6 to 7 hours with just GPS on.

Pros:
  • Compact size, easier to hold in my hand or stash in my pocket than the previous HTC Desire
  • Volume seems louder than the Desire
  • Display better than the Desire in bright sunlight
Cons:
  • Poor digital zoom
  • Video quality reminding me of 70s footage rather than the current decade!

I need to test the phone when it decides to rain!! again and see how long the GPS lasts. So will do another post in the future on how I'm getting on with the phone.

It's a shame the camera and video camera let the phone down. If you want a water resistant and dust-proof phone Sony have recently released the Sony Xperia Go phone. It's got a 5 MP camera and does 720P HD video.

My current phone contract doesn't run out until next March so will see if the phone is available on my network provider. If it isn't the phone should of come down in price so I could sell my upgrade phone and put the money towards the Sony one!!

So for now I'll be carrying both phone and camera if the weather is fairly decent!

Things To Do in 2012 so far....

So in 2012 I want to see if I can maintain 50 miles a month, any more is a bonus!

Is what I set myself at the beginning of 2012.

January’s figure was 51.70 miles and February’s was 50.85 miles. Both months took motivation mainly on the last day of each month! to hit the 50 miles target.

Its 14 days into March and current total is 44.17 miles, reckon be 50 miles by Sunday!

Delaying the Chatwins Cake Challenge by a couple of months has helped spur me on with the running part of my monthly miles.

Run – Done

  • Record a PB on Endomondo for 2 miles then improve upon it
  • (2 miles doesn’t seem to be recording as a PB so using Cooper (12 min) in 1.38 minutes)
  • Run 5k in one go = 29 minutes 51 seconds

Run – Still To Do!

  • 1km under 5 minutes
  • 1 mile under 8 minutes
  • Get to the top of Bosley Cloud in under 40 minutes
  • Run 10k in one go

Walk – Still To Do!

  • Finish off the Gritstone Trail
  • Finish the Dane Valley Way
  • Start and finish the Sandstone Trail

Completing the above along with walks in Wales and The Lakes should give me a nice amount of total miles by the end of 2012 J

Things To Do in 2012

After reaching the peak of 100 miles in one month the mileage dropped off once hitting 40.

Since the dip! though they have been back on the increase: 19 miles, 26 miles and 44 miles.

The effort in December paid off though as I hit the 400 miles mark (taken 7 months).

So in 2012 I want to see if I can maintain 50 miles a month, any more is a bonus!

Run
1km under 5 minutes
1 mile under 8 minutes
Record a PB on Endomondo for 2 miles then improve upon it.
Be able to run 5k then 10k in one go.
Get to the top of Bosley Cloud in under 40 minutes.

End of Feb got another Chatwins Cake Challenge so getting back out running should help with the above!

Walk
Finish off the Gritstone Trail
Finish the Dane Valley Way
Start and finish the Sandstone Trail
